About us:

RAD ENGINEERING, LLC, represents the collective vision of Justin Land and Daniel John Sullivan. For years both worked in different parts of "technological America", and both noticed the same trend: the downgrading of hard work, the diminishing capacity for problem solving, the deliberate dumbing down of the American people, more Home Depots, fewer Fry's Electronics. Justin confronted Dan about these topics in 2021, and a year later, spending time researching radio, telecommunications, and alternative economic strategies, Justin and Dan formed more than just a business, but forged a vision for a different kind of technology company.

RAD ENGINEERING is committed to "Right to Repair", but what does that mean? A good place to start is what it DOES NOT mean: it does not mean cheating customers, it does not mean designed obsolescence, it does not mean building crappy products that will be thrown away, into some landfill ... or worse, simply dumped into the ocean.

Right-to-Repair, simply put, means YOU HAVE THE RIGHT to fix anything you buy, if you have the tools to fix it ... but it also means designing products that CAN be repaired by an ordinary customer, within limits. It's doubtful that you can repair a blown capacitor on a circuit board, but you can replace it - so WHY NOT make a choice, as a manufacturer, to make that process as easy as possible and design circuit boards so that people, with the right tools, within reason, CAN FIX IT?

Right-to-Repair means RIGHT TO UNDERSTAND: at RAD ENGINEERING we have done, and will continue to do, free education, open documentation, and a spirit of building a collaborative community around our products. We have a vision, and we know we can't do this alone, so we hope others join us on this road.

RAD ENGINEERING is at the beginning of its path, but so far the adventure has been epic!

Daniel Sullivan, CEO

Dan, about 10 years ago ...

Dan grew up in the pacific northwest, rural Washington State, Skagit county. He was one of eight kids, not quite the middle child, but he might as well have been. Growing up, back in the 1970's and 80's, he experienced a slice of America that later in life he harkened for, something simpler, something less frantic and in 2021, he found this again in rural Utah. His father was a logger and a WW2 veteran, his mother an honor graduate from the University of Washington, at a time when women were still being told "stay at home". She managed to raise, feed, 8 crazy kids without going insane - by itself remarkable. Even more remarkable, his mother started a career while raising her kids and became an inspiration and a powerful voice in her community.

Dan attended the University of Washington and studied history while there, afterwards he earned a masters degree in History with a focus on military history. He was also enrolled in the Army ROTC program while in graduate school, and he received his regular army commission in 1996, and took the oath to serve his nation that same year. He served honorably, for 3 years, on active duty and was honorably discharged in 1999. He never regretted serving, but he realized that it wasn't the life for him.

After leaving the Army, Dan pursued a career in technology - at first working as a process improvement specialist for Rolls-Royce, PLC. While there, he learned a great deal about supply chain and logistics problems. He developed tools to detect supply chain problems and to analyze delivery, as a metric, in terms of the vendor base. After 9/11, Rolls-Royce went through lay-offs, and Dan was let go - but he never forgot the critical lessons he learned while there, even for a short time.

After Rolls-Royce, Dan focused on computers: specifically, computer programming and systems engineering. He went back to school, earned a second bachelors degree in Informatics from IUPUI (Indiana University / Purdue University Indianapolis) in 2003, and started his life as a software developer. During his 20 years of work in the field of software development he has worked in healthcare, real time engineering, logistics and supply chain systems, educational systems integration, data mining, knowledge discovery, data warehousing and big data problems. He has always had an interest in telecommunications, and with RAD ENGINEERING his interest became a reality.

Dan is passionate about human liberty and dignity and does what he can to support and promote free speech platforms and technology.

Dan's role as CEO will be the following: to evangelize and speak on topics related to RAD ENGINEERING's technological vision, to inspire team members, to attract high quality employees and to figure out creative strategies to retain the best and brightest teammates. He will also work tirelessly to be a voice for the "customer", without whom no business is possible. He wants RAD ENGINEERING to have customers, one day, who's parents were customers and were so happy that they recommended the company to their kids.

Justin Land, CTO

Justin, CTO

Justin was born in Amarillo, TX. He moved to Colorado in 2005 to live a life of adventure, he has been a ski bum, a back country explorer, a river and rafting guide. During his time guiding/leading tours in the wilderness he was able to see huge swaths of this nation and he's been on many of the most dangerous rivers around.

During a trip to Mexico in 2008, Justin was robbed. The robbery was a life changing event that left him in a situation to "start again", a story that is true for almost all of us - reaching points in our lives where the path diverges, or a choice is presented. He returned back to the states and attended courses in welding. He earned the necessary licenses and began a career of industrial welding, working on projects around the country, power plants, industrial facilities, covering 14 different states. Justin picked up many skills along the way, during his time as a contracting welder. He worked with mechanical, electrical, structural engineering problems and became pretty handy with a chainsaw, starting a firewood business or two.

Justin became interested in electronics and radio at a very young age, but it wasn't until 2019 that he began his journey of digging deep into the subject, while he was working in Minnesota. He started experimenting with different kinds of antenna arrays, coax, wiring, radio sets, and started setting up shortwave radio stations. In 2021, he dove into digital radio encoding over analog broadcasting, as it has many practical applications. Justin noticed many holes and voids in the current systems being used, and found software tools that were underutilized. One very useful application, JS8 Call (which was based on WSJTX for FT8 encoded transmissions), caught Justin's eye.

During Chistmas 2021, while Dan and Justin were talking, Justin proposed the idea for a "kit" or tool set, that would allow an ordinary CB radio operator to send and receive digital messages. Understanding the limits of JS8, they both explored this idea, and by the first week of January 2022, they had already begun work on this tool kit, documenting the steps, and, as importantly, sharing the discoveries with others in the community.

As Chief Technology Officer, Justin will lead a team to manage product development and manufacturing of the RAD TERMINAL, to implement strategic sourcing strategies, and to be an innovator and explorer, finding new realms, arenas, for RAD ENGINEERING to expand into.

Beth Cripps, VP of Operations

Justin, VP of Operations

Beth spent her childhood and young adulthood in rural northeast Utah, in the shadow of the Uinta Mountains. She is the youngest in her family, and from this she learned the art form of the "tiny rudder" - she is great at finding opportunities and directing team effort, and she does so in a powerfully humble way.

At a young age Beth had to become an adult, and because of this she is sensitive work/life balance issues and is a powerful voice for a different kind of start-up culture. She is the mother of two children, whom she adores, and she has spent a great deal of time working in healthcare and medical services.

In her 20's, Beth was diagnosed with acute and debilitating epilepsy. Already a mother, she spent her time on physical therapy and the other necessary work to be there for her kids and her friends and wider family. She manages this as best she can, but she does so as an inspiration.

What is Beth into: a) long walks off of short piers AND b) pushing people into swimming pools ...

Beth's current role at RAD ENGINEERING: human resources, helping us track customer issues, ordering components, marketing and sales, managing billing and to enable our start-up to function on a very limited budget. Basically: helping us keep the wheels on while we grow the business.
